Mood & Pain: Music's Role in Depression

People often turn to music to ease their mind and spirit. In medical settings , music and music therapy is gaining traction as a complementary, integrative treatment tool in addressing acute and chronic pain. Unresolved pain can lead to depresssion. There are varying beliefs and studies on the effects of listening, for instance, to ‘sad’ music- as crying, in particular, can have physically satisfying outcomes. The essential critical piece of music application decision-making may be related to helping consumers understand their emotions related to mood and behavior. Insight and mood regulation especially in conditions related to pain involve careful cognitive and emotional assessment, and music therapists address this in treatment planning across a myriad of varying disease trajectories.
